Heathwood Hall Middle School students set an ambitious goal of raising $13,000 for Harvest Hope Food Bank at this year’s Turkey Trot—and surpassed it by raising more than $14,000!
The Turkey Trot, which brings Middle School students together for a morning to walk laps on Heathwood’s track, has raised money for Harvest Hope for over a decade, with total donations now surpassing $125,000. The funds raised this year will provide more than 75,000 meals for those in need in the Columbia community.
Heathwood students, parents, and teachers relished the opportunity to walk and jog together for a good cause under cloudless blue skies on November 24. But it was the fundraising work the students did before the event that made the Turkey Trot such a success. “Over 80% of the Middle School student population participated in the fundraising, and many students donated their own money to help reach our goal,” said Middle School Dean of Students Rich Edwards. “It’s phenomenal how the Middle School community rallies for Turkey Trot and Harvest Hope Food Bank year-in and year-out.”
The Turkey Trot, said Edwards, “is what Heathwood is all about. Heathwood is, and always will be, passionate about giving back to the Columbia community. Middle School students enjoy the art of giving back, and we as a school embrace this philanthropic learning experience.”
