Chemistry II Class Lab
at Midlands Tech

What is the percentage of hemoglobin in your blood anyway? That was the question posed to chemistry II students during a December 6th off campus lab session conducted at Midlands Technical College. Ms. Mary Breci, the director of the Medical Laboratory Technicians program at Midlands Technical College, instructed Erin Mullaney, Rachel Maree, David Ziegler, Carlton Bowers, Felix Jostarndt, and Jonathan Thompson on the chemical process and procedure. What an exciting opportunity for the chem II students to integrate their biological and chemical knowledge as well as apply their laboratory skills in a real life experiment. For the experiment, students chemically prepared both test and standard blood samples and used a spectrophotometer to measure the concentration of hemoglobin in these samples. In order to complete the Beer-Lambert lab done at the MTC's laboratory, the students had to utilize techniques and instruments very different from their normal ones. However, Ms. Breci was very complimentary of the students' ability to pipette, measure and follow the chemical discussion and calculations. Hats off--or rather--shields off to the Heathwood's chemistry II students!!!
