Heathwood vs. Hammond
Can Bowl

Hundreds of hungry people across the Midlands came out winners thanks to the first-ever Heathwood-Hammond "Can Bowl." The charitable competition, timed to coincide with the schools' annual football game, pitted supporters of each school against each other in a drive to see which school could collect the most canned goods for the Harvest Hope Food Bank of Columbia. Thanks to contributions from families, teachers and administrators, the two schools raised more than 17,000 pounds of food with Heathwood Hall taking top honors for collecting the most canned goods. Supporters of the two schools collected enough cans to feed 305 people for 5 days. The total weight and the winner were announced at halftime of last Friday night's football game, the regular-season finale for both schools (Heathwood Hall won 35-6).
For their efforts, Heathwood Hall received the Can Bowl trophy (center photo), a replica of a giant soup can, which will be kept at the school until next year. The event was so successful that both schools anticipate a second annual Can Bowl in Fall 2002.
