3rd Grade Visits Cook's Mountain Swamp

| Third graders finalized a year of field study at Cook’s Mountain by hiking down into a breathtaking swamp. Hikers passed through five distinct ecosystems as they followed the path down a 400-foot decline. At the bottom of the trail, students admired towering tupelo gum cypress trees and a myriad of cypress knees. Environmental expert Yancey McLeod led the students in a variety of activities, including listening to and identifying the sounds of the swamp, reflective writing, and fashioning original clay creations. After this eventful morning, students, parents, and teachers hiked to another area of the swamp for lunch. Everyone was glad to reach the end of the path after the long hot hike back out of the swam, and thankful for the opportunity to visit Cook's Mountain throughout the school year. |
