3rd Grade

Cook's Mountain Project

On a crisp fall day in late October, the third grade took their first of three day-long field trips to Cook's Mountain in eastern Richland County. The Cook's Mountain program extends Heathwood Hall’s third-grade curriculum into the real world of the past, present, and future. These outdoor classes involve learning about different ecosystems on one unique mountain and in the connecting creeks and rivers of South Carolina. On this trip, the children learned to use a compass and identify animal tracks. Other lessons covered predators, prey, and pyramids (the food chain). Finally, using a seine, the children collected specimens from a pond and made plaster casts of the animal tracks.
