5th Grade Fall Celebration

The Fall Celebration has become a fifth grade tradition at Heathwood Hall, with students sharing their creative talents as they finish the first semester's major writing projects and a study of Latin America. The combined lessons leading up to this fun event illustrate how studies in several different subjects can be connected -- or integrated -- to help students understand and learn material more deeply. The fifth grade Gourd Project (see photo above) is a good example of integration. In this study unit, students examined plants in science -- including Gourds -- and displayed their cell models. Humanities classes then wrote creative legends about their gourds after studying the importance of these members of the cucumber family to the Ancient Maya, Incan and Aztec civilizations. Artistic inspiration was supplied by perennial guest and Heathwood friend "Miss Mitzie," and by art teacher Clare Scurry. The event culminated with an autumn feast overflowing with culinary contributions from each student's family.
The feast began after the fifth graders shared their gourd stories with writing partners, and ended when four year- old "Book Buddies" joined the fifth grade in celebrating the blessing of writing and good stories.
