5th Grade Fall Festival

Fifth graders recently celebrated their annual Fall Festival featuring an integrated art/science/humanities project with gourds that helps students find their voices as writers. The students' stories are inspired by gourds that are grown, harvested, dried and then painted by each young person. The project also leads students to a broader understanding of the meaning of relationships. The study of plants, leaves, and photosynthesis in science reveals how dependent humans are upon the plant world for life. Art teacher Clare Scurry showed students how to look for patterns in nature and then design gourds using space and balance. The gourds opened opportunities for these students to understand different cultures and civilizations. The culminating activity -- the Fall Festival -- allowed everyone time as a community to share the stories, speeches, and painted gourds.
