Athletic Center Takes Shape

Crews worked the weekend of September 25 to hoist enormous concrete walls into place for the Heathwood's new Athletic Center. Scheduled for completion in January 2005, the facility utilizes a process called tilt panel construction. The process involves framing, pouring and forming walls at ground level. After the concrete sets flat on the ground, a giant crane lifts the solid concrete panels and forms the facility's exterior walls. Later, steel beams are put in place to give the structure added rigidity. The steel beams also bear the weight of the floors.
