Will Hobbs - Visiting Author

Will Hobbs, award-winning author of adventure stories, spent March 3 at Heathwood as the school's 2005 Visiting Author. Intermediate and middle school students studied his books which are set primarily in the western U.S., Canada and Alaska. During his presentation, he shared the true stories -- either historical or personal -- that inspired his novels. He also showed slides of the actual settings, including the Yukon, Grand Canyon, and several national parks.  Mr. Hobbs ate lunch and swapped exciting outdoor stories with PEAK Outdoor program staffers Stan Wood and Katherine Holloway, and with members of the student paddling club, the River Dogs.

Mr. Hobbs, who taught Language Arts for 17 years, also held a writing workshop with 16 students, 4 each from the fifth through eighth grades. He shared some of his writing secrets, challenged the students to write using some of his guidelines, and then helped them critique their work.
