College students help teach 5th graders about El Nino

On November 18, Heathwood's fifth grade hosted an educational Earth Festival that incorporated lessons in science, the arts, history and geography.  The event was designed by local college students who helped the youngsters learn more about how the El Nino phenomenon influences weather around the world. Throughout the morning, fifth graders moved through a series of creative stations designed by the college students, learning more about the floods and droughts that have been linked to El Nino and the similar La Nina.  The students used West African dance to depict the effects of the various categories of hurricanes and examined in detail the watersheds of our state. Special thanks to Dr. Doug Williams and his students at the SC Honors College for leading this active day of learning in the Intermediate School.
