Fourteen Heathwood Students Earn Gold in National Spanish Exam
Heathwood Hall has recently learned that the fourteen students who earned Gold Medal Placement (95th percentile or higher) on the 2011 National Spanish Examinations have received monetary awards.
Taking part in the National Spanish Exam were over 150,000 students competing at various levels of participation. Heathwood Hall students also competed nationally with the likes of many other prominent schools such as Charlotte Country Day, Boston Latin, the Lovett School, and Regis to name a few.
However, unlike the competition of the National Merit Scholarships in which each state is allotted a certain number of winners, the National Spanish Examinations have no such rule, meaning that some states have no gold medals at all.
Competition in the 7th grade included 6,000 students, while the 8th grade competition had 38,000 students. Each exam incorporates an on-line test that lasts approximately two hours, allowing students to earn up to 400 points covering grammar, vocabulary, listening and translation.
Heathwood Hall commends our fourteen Gold Medal Placement Award winners for their outstanding dedication and achievement:
Owen Lord, Victoria Grice, Kate Hoffman, Jamie Mayson, Sunaina Kapur, Will Till, Carolina Nassab, Jessica Boomhower, Maddy Parrott, Michaela Jenkins, Ella Bock, Faith McKie, Daniel Barbeau, and Mary Royall Wilgis.
