Dr. Gardner Discusses College With Senior Class
The College Counseling Office had the pleasure of hosting Dr. John N. Gardner for two sessions with the Class of 2012 and their parents. Dr. Gardner is best known as the initiator of a 1982 international reform movement in higher education to call attention to and improve what he originally coined "The Freshman Year Experience," later renamed “The First-Year Experience.”
Dr. Gardner presented a joint session entitled, “Making the Most of a College Choice Partnership (Myself, My Family, Heathwood and Others)”. This session was followed by a session exclusively for the senior students. Students were able to ask questions and candidly discuss their concerns, questions, impressions, and thoughts about their upcoming college choices.
Senior Virginia Kluiters remarked, “I enjoyed the presentation. I thought the statistics were very interesting.”
Dr. Gardner has partnered with us over the past two years, and we are very excited about his involvement. Heathwood holds a special place in Dr. Gardner’s heart. His son was a 1994 Heathwood graduate, and he is the grandfather of a Heathwood first grade student.
Senior Mitch Watford summarized the day nicely in his comments, ”I really enjoyed the speaker. He had some very interesting facts and statistics that caught my attention. His openness to questions that I had was a high point of the session as well.”
Heathwood Hall thanks Dr. Gardner for a job well done.
