Heathwood Earns Distinction as Green Business Once Again

As the first Midlands-area school to earn designation as a Green Business from the City of Columbia, it has long been a part of our mission and program to serve as advocates for our environment. Mainatining our standing as a Green Business each year is accomplished by routinely updating the City of Columbia on our progress with a number of environmetnal projects and initiatives.

Earning this disntiction again in 2012, we are proud to have passed several important milestones; the opening of a LEED certified building with our new Dining Commons, the completion of last year's energy audit, and the development of the S.E.ED. team which is pioneering a number of on-going projects.

At its core, Columbia's Green Business membership program is a voluntary program that encourage workplaces to take proactive steps toward improving their environmental commitment while improving their bottom line as well. The program recognizes businesses that operate in an environmentally friendly manner and encourages other workplaces to adopt green business practices.

Organizations can become a Green Business member through a number of steps; by establishing a workplace “Green Team," along with drafting a narrative detailing the steps taken to conserve water and energy, reduce waste and recycle, and prevent pollution.

Finally, each organization must submit one or more significant goal(s) for the coming year in at least one of the aforementioned areas.
