2011 SCJAS Annual Meeting Presenters from HHES

All year the students in Heathwood’s Honors Science Program have been conducting, analyzing, and writing about research projects that they have designed and completed.   The scientific research papers are scored and awarded prizes separately from the oral presentations and the following is a summary of the results of the papers submitted to the South Carolina Junior Academy of Sciences for judging by practicing scientists and university science faculty.

2011 SCJAS Annual Meeting Paper and Oral Presentation Award Winners

The 2011 SCJAS Annual Meeting was held at South Carolina State University on Saturday, April 16th in conjunction with the SC Academy of Science (SCJAS); the adult Professional Scientific organization that is the parent group for SCJAS. At this meeting, there were a total of 156 projects presented by 173 students from seven South Carolina Schools. Heathwood Hall was one of two independent schools to attend and present at the meeting. A total of 27 projects in eight different categories were presented by 47 students in 9th through 12th grade in the Heathwood Hall Honors Science Program.

The scientific research papers are scored and awarded prizes separately from the oral presentations and the following is a summary of the results of the papers submitted to the South Carolina Junior Academy of Sciences for judging by practicing scientists and university science faculty.
The Oral Presentations are judged as a separate event and Heathwood Honors Science students earned a number of awards in this area as well.

2011 SCJAS Annual Meeting Special Award Winners

Maddie Norris was awarded the Winthrop University Behavioral Science Award for her oral and paper presentation on the Effect of Social and Non-Social Rewards on the Accuracy and the Reaction Time of a Go/ No-Go Task of Young Children in the category of Psychology and Sociology.

Christopher Metzger, Fripp Prioleau, and Maddie Norris have received the honor of an invitation to represent SC and present their research at the national level during the American Junior Academy of Science annual meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia next February 16-20, 2012. HHES science students who have also received this honor and are now AJAS fellows are: Frances Ellerbe & Catherine Walker (2006), Ian Buckley & Patrick Reeves (2010), and Mackenzie Sumwalt & Amanda Hoefer (2011).
