Academic Overview
The Heathwood Hall program is designed to help students progress from dependence in early childhood to personal and intellectual independence as young adults. With a competitive admission process, Heathwood accepts college-bound students of average to superior academic ability. Not surprisingly, the majority of Heathwood students traditionally score above state and national averages on standardized tests, including the SAT.
Heathwood's academic program is separated into four divisions: Early Childhood program, a Lower School, Intermediate/ Middle School and Upper School. Class sizes are limited throughout the School, so students, faculty and parents know each other well. The Lower School focuses on establishing basic skills in a safe, stimulating and developmentally appropriate environment. Children from 3 year-old nursery school through kindergarten call the ECLC home, and first through fourth graders are in our Lower School. In the Intermediate and Middle Schools -- grades five through eight -- students begin assuming greater responsibility for their academic progress and work toward mastering increasingly complex subject matter, including Latin and demanding mathematics and humanities courses. Upper School students in the ninth through twelfth grades benefit from a sophisticated and challenging high school program, featuring honors courses and a wide array of Advanced Placement courses for college credit. Each Upper School student enjoys the support and guidance of a faculty advisor and meets regularly with a full-time college counselor. Upon leaving the School, a Heathwood graduate is expected to reason logically, read critically, write correctly, express thoughts articulately and to both analyze and question vigorously.
