Heathwood Hall believes organized athletics offer important opportunities to teach fitness, teamwork, self-discipline, and individual excellence. A well-rounded education — including athletic activities — promotes a healthy mind, body, and spirit in each student. Accordingly, the School begins physical education classes in the earliest grade levels, and offers multiple opportunities for older students to become involved in Highlander athletics.

Students can participate in interscholastic competition in most sports beginning in the sixth grade. Middle School (B teams) generally include sixth, seventh and eighth graders, junior varsity players usually are ninth and tenth graders, and varsity teams include tenth through twelfth grade players. Exceptions to these grade level placements may be made for highly skilled players, provided grades are maintained and the child's parents consent to the move.
