Varsity Boys Soccer Report from Coach Andrew Richardson

After 110 minutes of action in Charleston, the 2012 Heathwood Hall Boys Varsity soccer season came to an end in penalty kicks, as the match ended via a 4-3 penalty kick shootout in favor of the Porter-Gaud Cyclones in the Quarterfinals of the SCISA AAA State Playoffs.

After a spirited and competitive first stanza, the Highlanders surrendered a 49th minute goal, and spent the rest of the 2nd half searching for an equalizer.  With just 2:12 remaining in regulation, Heathwood was awarded a corner kick, and senior Will Norris headed in the game-tying goal, sending the game into two 10-minute overtime periods.

Through the two 10-minute periods (and the two 5-minute golden-goal periods to follow), there was no game-winner, and the game was to be decided at the spot.

While the Highlanders came up short of the ultimate goal, this group enjoyed a fantastic season highlighted by wins over SCISA #3 Porter-Gaud (23-3-1) and SCHSL #4 Brookland-Cayce (18-4-2).

The 2012 senior class will be remembered for their outstanding leadership, and they were willing to buy into a new team philosophy in their final Highlander campaign.  Their work ethic, commitment, and enthusiasm spread throughout the program, and has laid the foundation on which we will continue to build the program.  Our massive thanks go out Jance Shine, Chris Metzger, Alex Bueno, Mitch Watford, Will Norris, John Fowble, Thomas Burg, and Fripp Prioleau, and congratulations to Burg, Fowble and Prioleau on the All-Region Team selections!  We will certainly miss each one of them, and their respective families who have also given so much of their time and efforts!

Varsity Girls Soccer Report from Coach Curtis Player

The girls soccer team entered the playoffs this week as the #2 seed in the Region.  With the #2 seed, the girls earned the opportunity to host Ashley Hall in the first round of the playoffs.  On Tuesday night, the girls were playing some of their best soccer of the year and walked away with a 2-0 victory.  The Highland goals were scored by Katie Bell.  Then on Thursday night, the Highlanders hosted Cardinal Newman, the defending State Champions. After missing on several early opportunities, the Highlanders surrendered 3 first half goals.  Although the Highlanders continued to put pressure on CN, the Highlanders were not able to find an answer and ended the season with a 3-0 loss.

The Lady Highlanders ended the season with an overall record of 12-6 and 6-2 in the region. The girls were led by captains Burgess Foster and Sarah Jackson Smith.  Also, congratulations to Erin Ress, Kelly Turbeville and Maddie Norris for making the 2012 All Region Team!
