Fine Arts Faculty

Barbara Bryan

Barbara is the Lower School music teacher and Lower School chorus director.  A teacher at Heathwood Hall since 1985, she established the long tradition of outstanding drama and chorus for the school’s younger students.  Barbara has a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of South Carolina.  Her husband, Tom Bryan, teaches in the Middle School, and their sons are Heathwood Hall graduates: Wills (’06) and Bo (’07).

Bill Cherry

Bill, who came to Heathwood Hall in 1979, is the Director of Technology. He also teaches graphic arts, video editing and comic book design classes in the Upper School. Bill has a Bachelor's in Math and Education from Vanderbilt University and a Master's in Administration from East Tennessee State University. His wife, Martha Lee Cherry, teaches in the Lower School, and their daughter Sallie is in the class of 2013.

Janis Corley

Janis is the IMS and US choral director. She taught at Heathwood Hall from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined the faculty in 2005. Under her direction, Heathwood Hall choirs have gained local, regional and national recognition for their superior ratings at choral clinics and competitions. Janis has a Bachelor’s in Music Education with a concentration in Piano and Voice from USC. Her son, John Mitchell Jordan, graduated Heathwood in 2002.

John Duhan

John directs Heathwood’s IMS and US bands. Since joining Heathwood in 2003, he has helped the Highlander Band program grow substantially. John has a Bachelor’s in Music with a performance certificate in Trombone from USC. He performs regularly with a variety of South Carolina ensembles, including the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral choirs.

EG Heard

EG is Heathwood’s drama director. She has taught at her alma mater (2001) since 2008. She has a Bachelor’s in Theatre with a concentration in Acting from USC. EG loves being active at Trustus Theatre, Workshop Theatre and Theatre South Carolina. She made her New York City debut in 2009 at La Mama Experimental Theater Club in a production of The System.

Cheryl Masterman

Cheryl teaches music to the Preschool and Nursery School students. She joined Heathwood Hall this fall after substituting for ECLC music and IMS and US band last year. Cheryl has a Bachelor's in Music Therapy from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and has taught Early Childhood music in AZ and MO. Her sons - Zach, Nick, and Ryan - are current Highlanders.

Kelly Neeley

Kelley teaches art to ECLC and LS students. She also offers an after-school Art Club for students in grades one through four and serves as the faculty liaison and treasurer for HARTS. A teacher at Heathwood  since 1996, Kelley has a Bachelor’s in Art Education from Winthrop University and a Master’s in Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley University.

Scotty Peek

Scotty teaches visual arts to Upper School students. He received his Master's in Fine Arts from USC in 2000 and his Bachelor's of Fine Arts from Austin Peay State University in 1995. He was included in the 2004 Triennial at the South Carolina State Museum and was one of four artists selected for 701 Center for Contemporary Art's inaugural 2008 exhibit. Scotty joined the Heathwood faculty at the beginning of 2012. www.scottypeek.net

Sally Plowden

Sally is the chair of Heathwood’s English department. An award winning writer, Sally has taught a wide range of English and writing courses in the Upper School since joining in 2000. She has a Bachelor’s in English from Columbia College, a Master’s in Composition and Rhetoric and a PhD in American Literature from USC. Her daughters, Anne and Grace, attend Heathwood, and her eldest, Caroline, graduated in 2009.

Clare Scurry

Clare teaches visual arts to IMS students. She joined Heathwood in 1992. She has a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts with a concentration in Ceramics from USC. Clare also enjoys teaching children’s art classes and hosting sales of her ceramic work in her Columbia studio. Her sons are Heathwood graduates: JP (1995), Happel (1999) and Hank (2007).
