Fine Arts - Related Programs
Creative WritingCreative writing is an integral part of the Upper School English curriculum. Every student crafts personal, narrative, and descriptive compositions during his or her time in the Upper School. Quite a few juniors' poems have been published in the past several years in both national anthologies and The State. Many seniors have won national essay contests in recent years. Literary Magazine & Photography ClubsThe purpose of these clubs is to publish The Palette, Heathwood's US literary magazine, and to encourage and support student literary and photographic work in an environment that appreciates such endeavors. The Photography club is an exciting new student venture, and members are planning outings to exhibits and contributions to Heathwood auctions, as well as work for The Palette. Private LessonsWeekly 30-minute music lessons are available through the afterschool program. Lessons offered in piano, violin, guitar, and voice for students K-12. Music instructors include members of the music faculty as well as other local music professionals. Spoleto Study AbroadSpoleto Study Abroad Summer Session is a hands-on immersion program in the arts and humanities for high school students, ages 15-19, interested in vocal music, visual arts, photography, drama, and creative writing. This is an experience that will appeal to the high school student serious about art, humanities and gaining a worldly perspective. Our program offers students who wish to grow academically, artistically and personally an opportunity to step into the cultural and artistic heritage of the Italian Renaissance. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with talented faculty and motivated peers from around the world. In addition to developing their artistic talent in the enriching hands-on studio workshops and classes, students will take twice-weekly day trips to cities in Umbria and Tuscany.
