Guidance and Counseling
Heathwood Hall’s guidance and counseling program offers support to achieving our school’s mission by providing direct services to our most important constituents, our students. Our counselors also provide indirect consulting services to parents and faculty.
Prevention and Guidance
Heathwood Hall counselors deliver a comprehensive guidance and counseling program, which includes classroom instruction on the important topics of self-awareness, interpersonal relationships, health and safety and career/educational goals. These structured lessons comprise the preventative component of the counseling program and are designed to help students acquire and apply knowledge that promotes healthy decision-making and supports overall wellness and development.
Intervention and Counseling
Knowing that the multiple aspects of a student’s academic, social and family life are intricately related, HHES’s guidance and counseling program offers direct services to students aimed at helping students recognize and overcome the challenges that are a natural part of our complex world.
Intervention strategies, such as individual and small group counseling, offer students the opportunity to develop skills in problem solving and goal setting. Counseling services give emphasis to self-direction and are available to all HHES students as a means to advance the best opportunities for their growth and development.
Human Growth and Development Specialists
Both prevention and intervention strategies are implemented in a manner that is age appropriate. Heathwood counselors are experts in human growth and development and understand the unique attributes, needs and challenges of the stages in early and middle childhood and adolescence.
Parenting Programs
The coordination and implementation of parenting programs designed to meet the need for information and techniques on current parenting practices is a crucial component of HHES’s guidance and counseling program. Please contact the counseling staff or visit our web site at www.heathwood.org for more specific information on the dates and times of parent meetings.
Consultation
Counselors work closely with students, families and the faculty to help ensure the successful development of every student. Heathwood counselors are skilled at dealing with family systems and the systemic nature of institutions. Counselors use these skills to act as catalysts for positive change and advocacy.
Psychiatric Consultation
Dr. Shaw Evans provides consultation to the students, families and faculty of HHES. Most referrals are made following assessments by the faculty or the counseling staff. Interventions may include general consultation with parents, assessment of a child, and classroom observations. Dr. Evans is available every other Friday afternoon. Scheduling is done via the counseling staff.
