Eighth
Grade RAFTING ADVENTURE Trip
Friday, August 31
We hope you’re
enjoying the summer of your life! It’s hard to believe that
the start of school is only a few weeks away. Sorry to deliver
that reality check, but the start of school often brings excitement
and adventure. It’s exciting to reunite with old friends
and begin making some new ones. The adventure this year is going
to hit you in the face like a splash of cold river water –
water from the US National Whitewater Center in
Charlotte to be exact. For the past few years, 8th graders at
Heathwood have started the year with a rafting adventure in an
effort to integrate new class members with old ones, build a sense
of community among the class, and strengthen individual and collective
confidence through a fun and challenging experience.
Students leave from the Alpine Tower Field at 8am sharp
on Friday, August 31. Students should arrive to board
the buses no later than 7:45am. The group travels to the
U.S. National Whitewater Center located in Charlotte, NC. The
recently opened Center boast the largest man-made circulating
whitewater river in the world and, along with the Saluda River
in Columbia, was home to the Junior International Wildwater Championships
in July. Students should bring a lunch to be eaten at the Center
during the day. After rafting our group returns to Heathwood.
Students may wish to bring money for snacks at the Whitewater
Center. We intend to return to Heathwood by 4pm Friday afternoon.
The PEAK staff along with the 8th grade teaching team will accompany
the students. Cost for the Rafting Trip is $60.
A limited amount of financial aid is available; those interested
in applying should contact Mr. Jones. Payment for the trip
is due on or before Friday, August 24.
