Meet the Teachers




Morgan Arnette |

Morgan is an Early Childhood Education major at the University of South Carolina.  Her favorite thing about Heathwood is the caring supportive community.  In her spare time she loves to read, paint, hangout with friends and play with her new puppy.


Lydia Padgett Bailey,  |

Is a parent of two Highlanders (Bailey, '24 and Liam, '30) and a regular substitute to the Lower School, Lydia knows the Heathwood community well. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Extended Learning team. Lydia is a Licensed Professional Coordinator and serves as a professor at Midlands Technical College. Lydia holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Clemson University and a Master's of Arts in Psychology from Winthrop University. Lydia has a clear love for Heathwood and we are delighted to have her join our team!


Taylor Barber |

Taylor is a senior at USC studying Early Childhood Education. She grew up in Blythwood, SC. Taylor has played three years of collegiate soccer at UNC-Ashville.  She is the oldest of five siblings and can't imagine life without them! When Taylor is not at Heathwood or with her family, she could probably be found shopping. 


Grace Bruffey |

Grace is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina studying Criminology and Spanish. She grew up in both Cincinnati, OH and Charlotte, NC, and has spent the last 7 years working in childcare. Grace loves working in AE because she absolutely adores kids. When she’s not at Heathwood, she’s probably studying or running.


Emma Chandler |

Emma is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina. She is studying Public Health currently, but in the process of changing my major to Nursing. She loves the environment at Heathwood and being able to be a part of the children's life. I love all the smiling faces and the love the children have for school and their friends.


Patti Daley |

Patti is a Senior at AC Flora High School, where she is an Honor student and plays on their Volleyball team. She loves all the kids at Heathwood and playing various games with them. This past summer she was a Lead Counselor in Heathwood's Highlander Summer Camps. She loves how kind the parents and kids are. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her family and friends. 

Mallory Durig |

Mallory is a junior at the University of South Carolina where she studies social work. She is originally from Blythewood, SC. When Malory is not at Heathwood, she enjoys spending time with friends and shopping. Mallory loves working in AE at Heathwood because she loves all the kids and their families.


Rilee Driggers |


Rivers McElveen |

Rivers is a senior at A.C. Flora High School - you will find him helping out in Thought Studio Monday - Friday afternoons. This past summer, he was a Jr. Counselor at Camp Gravatt. He likes playing and watching sports with his friends. This is River's first year working at Heathwood, but he is excited for what’s to come!

Kendall Nye |

Kendall is a junior at USC studying chemical engineering. She is from Charlotte, NC. When I'm not doing schoolwork, I love to spend time with friends and family. (Her sister Elizabeth worked with us for 3 years, while at USC). Working at Heathwood has been the best experience, the kids always brighten my day!

Anne Plowden |

Anne is a ballet dancer and takes classes online with the University of South Carolina as a Fashion Merchandising major. Anne grew up at Heathwood and went to AE herself every day, so she is very excited to actively be a part of the Heathwood community again.


Summers Poteat

Summers is a senior at AC Flora High School. She loves spending time and playing with all the kids at Heathwood. She worked this past summer as one of our Highlander Camp Counselors in the EC2 room. In her spare time, she enjoys with her friends and family while also playing Lacrosse for the Flora team.


Meredith Rashley

Meredith is a Senior at AC Flora High School, where she is in the Teacher Cadet Program and a honor student. She said working at Heathwood brings her so much joy everyday.  "Watching the kids grow, helping them with homework and bringing them a little bit of happiness each day is the most rewarding part of this job." This past summer she worked as a Counselor at Camp Gravatt as well as Heathwood Summer Programs. In her spare time, she loves spending time with family and friends, working out and babysitting!

Payne Rutherford |

Payne is in the Palmetto Teaching Fellows program at USC. In high school he worked with a program called "Real Men Read", mentoring troubled middle school students the importance of reading. He is helping in our Thought Studio with Rivers McElveen, Monday - Friday. In his spare time he likes to play golf and was named the Post & Courier High School Golfer of the Year, 2020.


Anna Shainwald |

Anna is a Senior at Heathwood. She loves working in Afternoon Express because all of the kids bring joy into my life. She also enjoyed working this summer helping with the camps. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her friends and family.


Rachel Ulmer |


Marietta Wickham |

Marietta is a sophomore at USC studying retail with a minor in Spanish. She is from Richmond, Virginia. When Marietta is not at Heathwood or doing work for school, she enjoys hanging out with friends, playing tennis, and playing with her kitten. Marietta loves AE because she enjoys getting to play with the super sweet and cute kids! 


Heathwood Plus Leadership


Allison Rashley, Director of Extended Learning & Assistant of Director of Summer Programs |

Allison has a wealth of experience in supporting and leading schools in the Columbia area. She served as Assistant Director at Eastminster Day School where she led the afterschool program and coordinated enrichment activities. Allison's enthusiasm for developing engaging programs and fostering relationships with families will be a valuable asset to our team!  

Allison has spent most her life in Columbia, where she has been raising her four children: Andrew (29), Virginia (19), Meredith (17), and Adrian (15). Allison and her husband, Neil, are actively involved with St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church. Additionally, Allison enjoys participating in the Kanuga Board of Visitors and is the newly elected President the Coralbell Garden Club.


Rachel Shelley |

Rachel Shelley is a 2016 graduate of Heathwood and the sister of two other Highlanders, Riana and Ryan ('20, '22). Rachel graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2020 with a Bachelors in Economics. During her time in college, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, where she served as Risk Management Chairwoman. Rachel began working in Afternoon Express in 2017, but upon graduation from South Carolina, took a break to work at a Big 4 Firm in Financial Crimes Investigations. She came back to Heathwood just before this summer and is excited to be involved again in the Heathwood community as the Interim Assistant Director of Extended Learning. In her free time, you can find her watching football and baseball, fishing with her family, or hanging out with friends.


Dillon Ulmer |

Dillon is a senior at the University of South Carolina pursuing a degree in Business. He comes to us from the Calhoun Academy in St. Matthew’s, SC where he was the recipient of the senior class citizenship award and an Eagle Scout. In addition to teaching in Afternoon Express, Dillon has worked as a substitute teacher at Heathwood as well as served as a lead counselor in Heathwood's summer camps.  He is serving as our Interim Summer Director.
