Meet the Teachers


Early Childhood Teachers


Mattie Amsler |

Mattie is a sophomore at University of South Carolina studying Early Childhood Education. Mattie grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania and recently spent her summers there as a nanny and caregiver. Mattie is excited for the opportunity to work with young children and bring her passion for young children to our early childhood classrooms!


Taylor Barber |

Taylor is a junior at USC studying Early Childhood Education. She grew up in Blythwood, SC. Taylor has played three years of collegiate soccer at UNC-Ashville.  She is the oldest of five siblings and can't imagine life without them! When Taylor is not at Heathwood or with her family, she could probably be found shopping. 


Tori Grant |

Tori is originally from Hartsville, SC. She has her B.S. in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina and is currently getting her M.S. in Occupational Therapy at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Tori loves working with kids and is excited to join the Afternoon Express Team!


Keondra Jones |

Keondra is a graduate student at Lenior-Rhyne University studying occupational therapy. She is originally from Augusta, GA and the oldest of seven. When Keondra is not at Heathwood, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and traveling. Keondra loves Heathwood and AE because she enjoys working with children and seeing them grow throughout the school year. 


Elizabeth Roddey |

Elizabeth is a Columbia, SC native and has been working as an Afternoon Express Teacher for two years. She is currently at Midlands Technical College studying Early Childhood Education. Elizabeth loves working with her students and coworkers and is excited about the upcoming year!


Kristen Shannon |

Kristen is a current freshman at USC studying nursing. She is originally from St. Matthews, SC where she attended Calhoun Academy. When Kristen is not spending time at Heathwood, she enjoys spending time with her sorority sisters and attending Carolina sporting events. Kristen loves helping out with AE because time time with kids is soothing and rewarding for her! 


Rachel Shelley |

Rachel is a senior at USC studying economics. She is originally from Columbia and an alumna of Heathwood (c/o 2016). She is also an active member of Gamma Phi Beta, serving as Chair of Risk Management. When Rachel is not at Heathwood or the library, she enjoys being with friends and family and watching sports.


Riana Shelley |

Riana joined the Heathwood Plus team this summer as a Highlander Day Camp counselor. She now enjoys teaching in Afternoon Express a few days a week. Riana lives and breathes the Highlander spirit: her father is the President of the Heathwood Highlander Club and she is a current student in the Upper School. “I think Heathwood’s philosophy about life and learning is exactly how everyone should see children and their education.”


Dillon Ulmer |

Dillon is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina pursuing a degree in Accounting. He comes to us from the Calhoun Academy in St. Matthew’s, SC where he was the recipient of the senior class citizenship award. Dillon is active on campus and enjoys volunteering in USC's Dance Marathon. In addition to teaching in Afternoon Express, Dillon has worked as a substitute teacher at Heathwood as well as served as a lead counselor in Heathwood's summer camps.


Mary Ann Wright |

Mary Ann is an alumna of Heathwood Hall and a freshman in college studying Early Childhood Education. She has worked in Heathwood's Summer Camps as a counselor for three years and is excited to be able to join the AE team, too! She loves working at Heathwood because she gets to know the students and watch them learn and grow.


Marietta Wickham |

Marietta is a sophomore at USC studying retail with a minor in Spanish. She is from Richmond, Virginia. When Marietta is not at Heathwood or doing work for school, she enjoys hanging out with friends, playing tennis, and playing with her kitten. Marietta loves AE because she enjoys getting to play with the super sweet and cute kids! 


Lower School Teachers


Allison Cohen |

Allison is a junior at USC studying Elementary Education. She is from North Augusta, SC. When she is not in class or at Heathwood, she is playing with her dog, reading, or spending time with friends. Her favorite thing about Heathwood is the close-knit community where everyone helps everyone. 


Mallory Durig |

Mallory is a junior at the University of South Carolina where she studies social work. She is originally from Blythewood, SC. When Malory is not at Heathwood, she enjoys spending time with friends and shopping. Mallory loves working in AE at Heathwood because she loves all the kids and their families.


John Brumbaugh |

John is starting his fourth year of being an Afternoon Express Teacher, as well as being a substitute teacher at Heathwood Hall. He grew up in Blythewood, South Carolina, and is a graduate from the University South Carolina with a degree in Middle Level Education with a concentration in English and Social Studies. In his spare time, he enjoys watching soccer, especially during World Cup Season, traveling, and spending quality time with his ferret, Gomez.


Davis Hogan |

Davis is a GSCOM and Accounting major at the University of South Carolina. When not at school or work, Davis spends his free time playing basketball, golfing, and especially fishing. Davis is proud to call Murell's Inlet, S.C... in fact, it is the only place he will saltwater fish. Davis loves working at Heathwood because he loves all the kids and the "work" does not feel like work at all. 


Kayla McClary |

Kayla is currently a junior at the University of South Carolina, studying Elementary Education. She has studied the Reggio Emilia teaching methods abroad in Italy where they originated. Kayla is originally from Lexington, SC and enjoys playing frisbee, going to USC football games, and eating pizza. Kayla is excited about coming back as an Afternoon Express Teacher this year!


Caroline O'Looney |

Caroline is a junior at the University of South Carolina studying public relations. Before coming to Afternoon Express, Caroline coached a soccer team and worked in summer camps back home in Memphis, Tennessee. Caroline loves being a part of a community that is much like her own K-12 program, one that values academics, athletics, and character development. 




Middle School Teachers


Grace Baker |

Grace is originally from Tampa, Florida. She went to Sewanee: The University of the South where she studied French. Grace spends her summers as the Programs Coordinator at Camp Ton-A-Wondah in Hendersonville, NC. When Grace is not at Heathwood, she enjoys spending time with friends and exploring Columbia. Grace loves AE and Heathwood because she gets to see students learn and grow.


Maddie Corso |

Maddie is a senior at the University of South Carolina where she is studying Middle Level Education. Maddie is from New Milford, Connecticut where she has worked as a substitute teacher and has spent countless hours tutoring middle school students. Maddie is an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and enjoys sports, volunteering, and cheering on the Gamecocks!


Mason McGowan |

Mason is a junior at USC majoring in Sports and Entertainment Management. Originally from Albermarle, NC, Mason is a big fan of Gamecock athletics. When Mason is not at Heathwood or studying, he loves spending time with his new black lab puppy, Rhett.


Kassie Netherland |

Kassie is a junior studying Exercise Science at UofSC. She is originally from West Virginia and enjoys the warm winters of South Carolina. When Kassie is not at Heathwood, she is playing with her golden retriever, volunteering, or studying for school. Kassie loves Heathwood because she loves working with kids.


Elizabeth Nye |

Elizabeth is a junior at the University of South Carolina, studying Finance. She is an active member of Pi Beta Phi through which she has helped with book drives and volunteers weekly at Champions are Readers in local elementary school. Elizabeth is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. When she is not at Heathwood, she spends a lot of time outdoors, likes to check out new restaurants, and spend time with friends. Elizabeth loves Heathwood because she gets to see the kids grow and learn. 


Heathwood Plus Leadership


Jessie Garlinghouse, Director of Extended Learning |

Jessie has served as a teacher for the last eight years in Washington, DC, working in both private and public schools. Most recently, she spent five years as a first grade teacher and the language arts department chair at Georgetown Day School, a nationally-noted independent school in the heart of the District. Jessie has dedicated her summers to training new teachers for The New Teacher Project in DC Public and Charter Schools. During her time in D.C., Jessie presented at multiple national conferences on topics of anti-bias education and family engagement. She is eager to bring her passion for curriculum development and student-centered programming to Heathwood’s auxiliary initiatives.


Jessie grew up in Kansas where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Kansas State University. After working as an assistant toddler and preschool teacher, she went on to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of Southern California and a Certificate in Advanced Education Leadership from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. She is currently working on her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. 


Allison Rashley, Director of Summer Programs & Asst. Director of Extended Learning |

Allison has a wealth of experience in supporting and leading schools in the Columbia area. Most recently, she served as Assistant Director at Eastminster Day School where she led the afterschool program and coordinated enrichment activities. Allison's enthusiasm for developing engaging programs and fostering relationships with families will be a valuable asset to our team!


Allison has spent most her life in Columbia, where she has been raising her four children: Andrew (28), Virginia (19), Meredith (16), and Adrian (15). Allison and her husband, Neil, are actively involved with St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church. Additionally, Allison enjoys participating in the Kanuga Board of Visitors and the Coralbell Garden Club.
