On May 3, 2019, we held a dedication ceremony for Heathwood's new Early Childhood Playground, which we designed in close collaboration with experts in early childhood development. Both the equipment and the landscaping of the playground have been thoughtfully chosen to develop various kinds of intellectual and physical growth, from creativity, to balance, to teamwork, to fine motor control.
The playground is a valuable addition to the EC program, says Early Childhood and Lower School Head Stephanie Scanlon, because young children accomplish so much through play: "We recognize the power of play in the development of the whole child, which allows them to 'learn how to learn' by exploring, investigating, and experimenting. We also recognize that play feeds both language development and the children's general understanding of the world around them better than any amount of instruction ever could."
The dedication ceremony, held just after the conclusion of this year's Habitat Day program, allowed Early Childhood students to show off their new playground to their parents on a beautiful spring day.
