Five Honored with Hickman Awards
Heathwood parents Denise Hall, Kelly and Paul Olsen, and Missy and Davis Buchanan were honored on May 30 as the 2019 recipients of the Hickman Award.
Named in honor of Steve Hickman, who served as Heathwood Hall’s seventh head of school from 1999-2007, the Hickman award is given annually to members of the Heathwood parent body who demonstrate “selfless commitment, consistent involvement over a period of years, and a willingness to serve in ways that enhance the daily life of the community.”
As President of the Heathwood Parent Association (HPA) this year, head of the Upper School HPA last year, and HPA representative on Heathwood's Board of Trustees for the past two years, Denise Hall has made significant contributions to the life of the school through her tireless and fearless leadership. In the words of Head of School Chris Hinchey, "Denise always took the time listen and give feedback in every situation and event that HPA had a hand in. Her generous commitments of time, energy, ideas, creativity, collegiality, and passionate support for the mission of this school are impressive."
As supporters of Heathwood athletics, Mr. Hinchey noted, Kelly and Paul ('86) Olsen "stand in a category by themselves." In addition to their hours of work planning meals, volunteering in concessions, helping out at games and tournaments, and serving on the board of the Highlander Club, they've been a strong, supportive presence in the stands at countless games over the years. Now that their son Reagan has graduated, said Mr. Hinchey, "the bleachers will seem a little empty next year."
Missy and Davis ('86) Buchanan have been tireless supporters of the school whose commitment to Heathwood's facilities has been exceptional. Missy has logged long hours in the Plant Manager's office and, said Mr. Hinchey, "the Plant crew will do anything for her." Davis has not only volunteered his time making significant home repairs through the senior class's Johns Island Service Project but has also taken on several construction projects around the school. In addition, as Mr. Hinchey noted, "he is generous with his time and serves on the Heathwood infrastructure and facilities committee. His advice and suggestions always enable the school to move forward with a prudent plan and he often helps expedite the process."
Thank you to the 2019 Hickman Award winners and to all the parents and friends of Heathwood who, in large ways and small, do so much to enhance our students' experience.
