The Heathwood Girls Bowling Team won the 2018 SCISA State Championship, and the Boys Bowling Team finished 2nd in the state.
In their inaugural year of being able to play at the Beltline Lanes, just across Bluff Rd. from campus, the Heathwood Bowlers posted stellar performances on several other fronts as well. Most notably, junior Laura McInnes took 2nd place in the SCISA Individual State Championship, and the co-ed team finished in 3rd place in the state.
The team's success, said Coach Bill Cherry, stemmed in large part from experience: "This senior class made up half of this year's team, both the boys and girls teams. Daniel Lucas, Kate Nassab and Daisy McLeod all started when they were in the 9th grade. Kristin Clemmons, Emmye Mullins, Amelia Robinson-Brown, and Duffy Beal joined us in their 10th grade year. So this team has been together for a number of years. The girls team has slowly gotten better over the past 4 years, finishing 3rd last year. It was so exciting to see them win the Championship this year."
At this year's SCISA state championship, the format was a two-round play-off format. All 11 of the school teams played it the first round, then the top 4 teams moved in to the championship round. All three Heathwood teams moved to the final round. We were the only school to advance all 3 of our teams.
After finishing in 3rd place in the first round, the girls team put together their best 3 games of the year with a 454 total to win the State Championship. They finished 89 pins ahead of the 2nd place team, Cardinal Newman. The team was made up of Catie Johnson, Emmye Mullins, Anna Davis, Laura McInnis, and Kate Nassab.
The boys team likewise improved their performance from the first round to the second, finishing the first round in 3rd place, but ending up in 2nd. The team was made up of Davis Buchanan, Wade Allen, Xander Postic, Daniel Lucas, and James Lucas.
Our co-ed team finished in 4th place in the first round. They finished in 3rd place in the final round with a 368 total. The players on this team were Daisy McLeod, Olivia Hampton, Grayson Miller, Robert King, Stuart Williams, and Rox Pollard.
In the Individual Bowling Championship matches, Heathwood was represented by Emmye Mullins, Laura McInnis, and Kate Nassab for the girls and Davis Buchanan, Xander Postic, and Daniel Lucas for the boys. Laura McInnis finished second in the state, out of 24 bowlers, with a total score of 441. EmmyMullins finished 7th with a 391. Xander Postic finish in 5th place with a 479, and Davis Buchanan finished in 7th place with a 456.
Congratulations to all our bowlers on a fantastic season!
