Girls Track Wins 3rd State Championship in Four Years

The Heathwood Hall girls’ track team turned in one of the best state meet performances in school history by winning 9 of 17 events at the 2021 SCISA AAA Track & Field Championship on May 1. The title is the girls’ team’s 3rd state championship in four years. The team scored 144 pts. and finished 28 pts. ahead of 2nd place Porter Gaud.

The Highlander charge was boosted by first place finishes from Madelyn Gomez who won all three distance events (2 mile, mile, 800); Aly Conyers, who won the 400, 200, and finished 2nd in the 100;  Gabby David who finished in first place in the Long Jump and third in both the 100 & 200, and Janie Hicks, who finished in first place in the high jump. Additionally, the team finished in 1st place in the 4 x 800 meter relay thanks to a great effort by Reston Wood, Madeline Hurst, Cat Barron, and Hanna Coetsee. The 4 x 800 relay time of 10:08 established a new SCISA state meet record. The 4 x 400 meter relay also finished in first place and was powered  by Janie Hicks, Hanna Coetsee, Madelyn Gomez, and Aly Conyers. The 4 x 400 also established a new SCISA state meet record as well as a new school record!

The team’s performance was also boosted by an outstanding 2nd place performance by the 4 x 100 meter relay (Jasmine Trapp, Gabby David, Daryn Binns, Queseya Rhooms), who took the first place Porter Gaud team down to the wire. Additional points were scored by Hanna Coetsee (3rd in the 800), Pamela Ann Pope (4th in the pole vault), Catherine Barron (4th in the mile & 2 mile), Claire Sobel (4th in the 100 hurdles), Madeline Hurst (5th Mile & 6th 2 Mile) and Janie Hicks 6th in the 400 hurdles.

The Heathwood girls track team established SCISA state track meet records in an unprecedented 5 events (Long Jump, 4 x 800 relay, 400, 200, 4 x 400) yesterday and now holds SCISA State Meet records in 9 of the 17 events held at the state championship each year! Moreover, our Heathwood girls accounted for 4 of the 6 U.S. MileSplit National Elite performances in the state meet: Madelyn Gomez – mile run; Gabby David – Long Jump; Aly Conyers – 400 & 200.
