Heathwood Students Earn Adopt-a Stream Certification
In preparation for work they'll be doing this year testing water quality in the Gills Creek Watershed, seven Heathwood students earned certification on August 13 as South Carolina Adopt-a-Stream Volunteer Water Quality Monitors.
Seniors Olivia Antonetti, Sydney Helms, and Ava Rosenbaum, junior Hanna Jacobsson, sophomore Owen Bennett, 6th grader Davis Hagstette, and 5th grader Cullen Norman are now qualified to conduct water quality testing for air temperature, water temperature, pH, conductivity, and E. coli bacteria. Davis and Cullen are believed to be the youngest people to date to earn the certification.
The students will test creek water near campus on a monthly basis and report their findings to the SC Adopt-a-Stream program, through which communities, educators, volunteers, and local government agencies partner to protect and restore local waters and water quality.
The training was conducted by Heathwood alumna Eliza Nixon, '11, a Watershed Manager at DHEC, who has also mentored Heathwood students through the Columbia Connections program.
