Heathwood students excelled on multiple fronts at the 2018 South Carolina Youth in Government Conference on November 14-17.

Senior Ben Mathews won Outstanding Media Staff and senior Jackson Avery was named an alternate for the South Carolina delegation to the Conference on National Affairs.

The mock trial team of senior J.D. Heaton, sophomores Nico Adamo and James Lucas, and freshmen Austin Davis and London Patel received the Outstanding Attorney Team Award, while Nico Adamo also earned Outstanding Individual Attorney.

On the legislative side, freshmen Margaret Roney, Austin Tuller, and Christina Smith achieved the difficult feat of taking their bill to improve public education in SC successfully through committee, House, and Senate.

Sponsored by the YMCA, Youth in Government is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn how local and state government systems work so they know how to effect change within these systems. More than 1600 students from across the state took part in this year's SC Youth in Government conference.
