Heathwood Upper School Mock Trial Takes First Place at Regionals
In a competitive 10-school field, Heathwood’s Upper School Mock Trial Team finished in first place at this year’s Regional High School Mock Trial competition on February 27.
In addition to winning the overall competition, the team received multiple individual awards. Alyce Petit was Students’ Choice and Judges Choice for Best Attorney in every round in which she competed. Roy Matthews won a Students’ Choice and two Judges’ Choices for Best Witness. William McKelvey won a Students’ Choice award for Best Witness, Wallace Stuckey won Judges’ Choice for Best Witness, and Robert Petit garnered a Students’ Choice award and a Judges’ Choice award for Best Attorney.
The win was a true team effort. Marra Edwards and Emma shealy gave strong opening statements, Spears Goodlett and Marsh Taylor were an impressive duo, Lexie Colwell and Ben Matthews were unstoppable, and Lily Richter gave the performance of a lifetime.
Heathwood’s team was on the smaller side compared to most of their competitors, but strong support from their parents, who turned out in force at the competition, helped them have a commanding presence.
Their strong finish at Regionals earned the team a trip to the State competition March 11 and 12 in Lexington.
