History With a Personal Connection: 5th Grade Studies WW2 Through the Eyes of teacher's Uncle

Monday, November 12, 2018

On Veterans Day it's common for history classes to focus on critical moments in American military history. This Veterans' Day, 5th grade history teacher Kitty White took that focus a step further when she shared with students the story of her own uncle's experience in World War II.

As Ms. White discussed the sacrifices American soldiers have made for our country, she described what her uncle had shared with her about being forced through the Bataan Death March by the Japanese. Ms. White's uncle survived the march, went on to become a professor at Clemson, and was featured on 60 Minutes a few years ago.

The students, said 5th grade English teacher Lynn Cooper, "were enthralled" by having such a personal connection to what they were learning in the classroom.
