The Dorothy and Chalmers Poston Library at Heathwood Hall hosts two separate collections: one supporting students and faculty in Early Childhood through fourth grade, and one supporting students and faculty in grades 5-12.

Library Resources for Students

Public Resources

Students may access these resources freely, though some require students to create an account using their @heathwood.org email addresses.

Private Resources

Certain resources are only available to students through the libraries. Please see a librarian to learn more about access.

  • SC DISCUS - Discus is a collection of subscription databases provided by the South Carolina State Library, not a single database in itself.
  • JSTOR - A database that collects scholarly and peer-reviewed articles covering a wide range of subject areas.
  • NewsBank - Two new databases that  allow students to search through high-quality scans of newspapers both modern and historical.
  • The Wall Street Journal

Circulation Policy

Books are due three weeks from the date when they are check-out. Although the libraries do not charge late fees, if any book is overdue for two weeks or more, we consider the book lost. We will notify the student that they are responsible for replacing the book, and a fine will be added to their account.

Middle and Upper School students may log into the Middle and Upper School Library Catalog with their Heathwood username (the username portion of their email address: [username]@heathwood.org) to see which books they have checked out. Parents of EC/LS students may request a list of currently loaned books at any time from libraries@heathwood.org.

About Heathwood's Libraries

With over 12,000 volumes, dozens of periodical subscriptions, and numerous databases, the Early Childhood/Lower School collection offers age-appropriate materials that support the curriculum and encourage students to read for pleasure and information. The library also has a collection of non-print materials and professional and general interest periodicals. Students come to the library regularly to enjoy story time, check out books, and take part in instructional classes.

The Middle/Upper School library collection features over 14,000 titles (print and video), a subscription to the Overdrive e-book consortium which provides hundreds of e-books, 58 periodical subscriptions, and 38 databases. These resources provide excellent materials for the academic and pleasure reading needs of our students and faculty. The library is designed to allow class and small groups as well as individuals to use the resources simultaneously. Students are welcome to use the library at any time before, during, and after the school day.

Library hours are:

  • 7:45 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday
  • 7:45 AM – 3:30 PM on Friday
