Heathwood Hall Head Girls Basketball Coach John O’Cain has stepped down after seven years at the helm of the Lady Highlander program. In O’Cain’s tenure, the Highlanders collected four straight SCISA Region I-AAA titles, finished as the state runner-up in 2013, and captured the 2014 SCISA state title.

In a competitive 10-school field, Heathwood’s Upper School Mock Trial Team finished in first place at this year’s Regional High School Mock Trial competition on February 27.
In addition to winning the overall competition, the team received multiple individual awards. Friday night, February 19, over 20 Lower School students joined Upper School students for a Marine Science Movie Night. During the evening, Lower School students participated in several marine-centered activities, games, and crafts led by the Senior class officers.

Heathwood’s Upper School drama students exceled at this year’s PDA/SCThespians High School Drama Festival, held February 19-21 at Spartanburg’s Dorman High School.
Twenty Heathwood students traveled to the festival, where they competed against students from 25 public and private schools. Outstanding mock trial performance is becoming a Heathwood tradition, and this year’s Middle School Mock Trial team carried that tradition forward with aplomb, garnering multiple awards in regional competition at the Lexington County Courthouse on December 5, 2015.

Led by Lower School Science Instructor Natalie Ashenfelter and numerous parent volunteer coaches, 30+ Heathwood students traveled to the Storm the Citadel Trebuchet competition in Charleston, SC. on February 13.

There are great athletes, and then there are special talents. Heathwood Hall sophomore Maryah Nasir is one of those special talents.
Maryah’s claim to fame is distance running. She dominated the 2015 cross country season, winning 7 of the 8 races she competed in. Maryah’s performance earned her a top-5 statewide ranking and the fastest female time in the Midlands. Saturday, February 6 marked the first-ever appearance in the SCISA State Wrestling Championship final for the Highlander Varsity wrestlers, as they faced off against two-time defending state champion Cardinal Newman. After defeating archrival Hammond in the semifinals, Heathwood entered the contest, held in the Hammond gymnasium, as the underdog but quickly proved to be ready for the challenge.
