Heathwood Strength and Conditioning Coach Jay Spearman is the 2020 recipient of the National High School Strength Coaches Association's Griffin Scott Pherson Educational Learning Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a high school strength coach who best exemplifies what it means to be trustworthy, knowledgeable, effective, passionate, and transformational.

"We so proud that Jay has received this well-deserved award," said Heathwood Athletics Director Jeff Whalen. "Jay is passionate about his job and leads by example in his everyday actions with our students in strength and conditioning classes and team workouts. When you watch Jay interact with our student athletes you can see the effect and positive influence he has on them. Heathwood Hall is lucky to have someone like Jay who is so committed to serving others not only at school but in the community as well."

In addition to running Heathwood's strength and conditioning program, Coach Spearman is an assistant football coach, and the author of two children's books, I Am Chosen to Be a Friend, and I Am Chosen to Learn. He is also the founder and President of Bigger than Sports, SC, a foundation that works to equip student athletes by expanding their minds and helping them find purpose for their passions beyond athletics.
