Heathwood's Upper School Mock Trial Team is headed to Nationals! After winning the regional competition for the third year in a row, they were named 2018 State Champions on March 10 and will now advance to the National High School Mock Trial competition in Reno, NV May 10-12.
Winning the state competition is an impressive feat because the quality of all the participating teams is so high. With only the top 12 teams in the state selected to advance out of regional competition, every round is very competitive. The Heathwood team not only won the State Championship but also earned both individual awards in each round of competition. Senior Alyce Petit swept the attorney awards, winning Judges' Choice for Best Attorney in all three preliminary rounds, while junior Marra Edwards, and freshmen Nico Adamo and Ellie Colwell each won Judges' Awards for Best Witness.
Marra, Nico, Ellie, and sophomore Madeline Ashcraft also were honored with Best Witness or Best Attorney awards by their peers.
Team members included seniors Alyce Petit and Wallace Stuckey, junior Marra Edwards, sophomore Madeline Ashcraft, and freshmen Nico Adamo, Ellie Colwell, Mercedes Perez Shillington, and Jett Pindar. They are coached by Barbara Petit, who was the 2017 recipient of the South Carolina Bar Association's Citizen of the Year award for her work with the team.
