Heathwood 7th grader Jais Ward is the 2018 SCISA Girls Cross Country Individual State Champion, and the Heathwood Boys Cross Country Team are 2018 State Runners-Up.
Both the Girls and Boys teams capped off strong seasons with outstanding performances at the state meet, which was held at Heathwood on October 27.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Neb Sneath and freshman Hugh Willcox earned All-State honors by finishing in second and third place respectively among all runners, and sophomore Jack Cook (14th overall) and freshman Robert Golden (16th overall) also ran exceptional races for the Highlanders. Sophomores Thomas Harris (22nd place) and Joe French (26th place) and senior Ben Feldman (33rd place) rounded out the Highlander top seven. The team’s 2nd place finish out of the 11 schools competing in the state meet was their best finish since they won the state championship in 2016.
In addition to Jais Ward’s first-place finish, 7th grader Laela Caplinger (12th place), sophomore Catherine Barron (17th place), and 8th grader Taylor Smith (18th place) notched strong performances. Freshman Grayson Elliott and 8th graders Mela Gisewhite and Cameron Truesdale also ran well to help the Highlanders to a 3rd place finish among 11 schools.
