Why Heathwood Hall?

With 122 acres of outdoor classroom, Heathwood students can laugh, play, and learn outside with experienced teachers serving as facilitators. Student engagement and confidence are enhanced by unique facilities like our Science Lab and Art/Tinker Studio, by partnering with older students for learning experiences like our Biology Buddies program, and by family events like Paddle on the Pond and Habitat Day.

Heathwood's 122-acre bio-diverse campus is a vast outdoor classroom. Science lessons, art sessions, and more take place at our pond, in various ecosystems, and in our gardens, allowing students to have a learning experience that regularly extends beyond classroom walls.

The Early Childhood music program cultivates an environment that encourages each child to discover and express their unique musical abilities through singing, sound and instrument exploration, as well as playful creative movement. Children have the opportunity to engage in a variety of musical activities which promote and nurture the child’s cognitive, emotional, social, language and physical development.

Our primary focus is on getting to know each individual child as both a learner and as a person. That philosophy is essential to helping all students become the best versions of themselves, which is why we have a lead and associate teacher in each classroom throughout the Lower School who support the core academic instruction.

In the Lower School, we nurture the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually—through a compassionate, student-centered approach. Our curriculum builds a strong foundation in core subjects while fostering confidence, curiosity, independence, and self-awareness.
In addition to core academics, students engage in exhibitions of mastery that develop essential 21st-century skills like critical thinking, creativity, and public speaking. They also benefit from regular instruction in art, music, science, Spanish, library, and PE with dedicated specialty teachers.

In Kindergarten through 4th grade, project-based learning brings core subjects to life through hands-on exploration and real-world connections. Students investigate meaningful questions, collaborate with peers, and present their learning in creative ways. This approach builds critical thinking, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of the material—all while making learning fun and memorable.

Alongside core academics, Lower School students enjoy a rich related arts program, including visual arts, music, Spanish, PE, and weekly chapel. These classes are led by dedicated specialists and support both creative and spiritual growth in a way that honors all faith traditions.

Our Buddies Program pairs younger students with older peers to build connections across grade levels through shared activities like reading, art, and service projects. These relationships foster confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of community. Reading together not only strengthens literacy skills but also creates joyful moments that help students feel seen, supported, and inspired.

Our students in grades 1 – 4 participate in a 1:1 iPad program, our teachers have access to interactive instructional tools and web services, and the classrooms have shared devices that promote hands-on learning with the personalization that technology can offer. We understand that integrating technology into the classroom is a delicate balance, so we try to incorporate technology in age-appropriate ways that serve our students well.

Exhibition of Mastery

Beginning in Kindergarten, students participate in age-appropriate Exhibitions of Mastery—culminating projects that allow them to apply what they've learned and share it with others. These exhibitions build confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning. Whether presenting research, performing, or showcasing creative work, students learn to take pride in their growth and articulate their ideas with clarity and purpose.
