Extended Learning 

Engaging Minds Beyond the School Day

Extended Learning at Heathwood Hall is dedicated to providing exceptional care and enriching experiences for students outside of regular school hours. Through Afternoon Express, Middle School After-School Programming, Enrichment Activities, and Summer Programs, our faculty extend classroom learning in ways that continue to support students’ intellectual, creative, and moral development.

Afternoon Express (Early Childhood & Lower School)

Afternoon Express (AE) offers a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for students after the school day ends. Designed specifically for Early Childhood and Lower School students, AE provides a structured yet relaxed environment that supports the development of the whole child.

Hours: End of the school day until 6:00 p.m.

Daily Highlights:

  • Healthy snacks
  • Outdoor play and time in nature
  • Meaningful games and activities
  • Homework support and quiet time

With a focus on connection, creativity, and care, Afternoon Express gives students a joyful and restorative close to their school day.

Middle School After-School Programming (Grades 5 & 6)

Middle School students in 5th and 6th grades can participate in extended day programming through Afternoon Express. AE for Middle School emphasizes academic support, social connection, and enrichment that complements the school day.

Hours: 3:15 – 6:00 p.m.

Program Features:

  • Snack & Check-In: 3:15 – 3:30 p.m.
  • Study Hall or Extra Help: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
    • Supervised by a Middle School teacher and AE staff
    • Quiet, structured environment for homework
    • Collaboration with faculty to support student needs
  • Choice Time: 4:30 – 5:15 p.m.
    • Games, social time, or outdoor play
  • Late Stay: 5:15 – 6:00 p.m. (in Averyt Building)

Athletics Support: Students in grades 5–6 participating in interscholastic athletics can attend a free, supervised study hall before practice if practice begins after 3:45 p.m.

Cost: $15 per hour for non-athletics students starting at 3:30 p.m.

Note: Optional for 7th and 8th grade students.

Enrichment Activities (Early Childhood & Lower School)

Our after-school Enrichment Activities offer a fun, engaging way for students to explore new interests and build new skills. With rotating offerings each semester, students can dive into exciting programs like art, sports, music, and STEM.
