The Heathwood Hall Approach

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Heathwood Hall is committed to building upon its history as an inclusive school community by creating and sustaining an academic and social climate where diverse people live and grow together with respect, responsibility and understanding.

A Legacy of Inclusion

Founded in 1951, Heathwood Hall was the first independent school in the Midlands to embed diversity into its mission and values. We are committed to honoring the dignity of every human being and believe that a truly rich educational experience must reflect the diversity of the world our students will inherit.

Our DEI philosophy shapes every facet of school life—from curriculum and student programming to hiring practices and professional development. We aim to cultivate a school culture that celebrates differences, fosters mutual respect, and prepares students to lead in a multicultural world.

Why It Matters

To thrive as leaders in the 21st century, students must learn in environments where diverse perspectives are not only present but embraced. We challenge our students to engage thoughtfully, even when it’s uncomfortable, as part of their growth into culturally competent global citizens.

Our Commitment in Action

Student Programming – The goal of student programming is to provide support while preparing kids for a more global and interconnected world. Here are some of the ways in which Heathwood Hall promotes inclusion and awareness of diversity issues in our community:

Leadership Conferences & Workshops Over 75 students have participated in local, regional, and national events, including the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference—fostering self-reflection and community building in a multicultural environment.
National Mix It Up Day Encourages students to break social boundaries by connecting with peers outside their usual circles over lunch—building community and promoting civility.
Winterim A week-long experiential learning program with opportunities for cultural exchange, internships, leadership training, and service—locally, nationally, and globally. Past experiences include service in Peru, cultural exchanges in Costa Rica, and internships across Columbia.
