Admission Overview

The admission process begins by submitting a request for more information.  We will send you a packet of information and our Admission Office will contact you to begin a conversation about why Heathwood Hall might be the right place for your child and your family. While you can find out a great deal about Heathwood Hall from our website, a website cannnot capture all that makes our campus special.  From our students and faculty to our beautiful campus, there are many reasons why we will encourage you to come to campus and take a tour.  The admission process looks a little different depending on the age of the prospective student.  The information below will break down the admission process or each of our different grade-level groups and you will find a link to our online application.

Early Childhood Admission Process

Early Childhood 2s, 3s, and 4s

The following steps must be completed prior to an invitation to enroll. The Admission team will work closely with each prospective family to ensure a smooth process.

Application

The application is available using the button-link above and is sent electronically from the website to our office. There is an $80 application fee.
Applicants to the Early Childhood 2’s program must be 2 years old by September 1 of the year they enter school.
Applicants to the Early Childhood 3’s program must be 3 years old by September 1 of the year they enter school.
Applicants to the Early Childhood 4’s program must be 4 years old by September 1 of the year they enter school.

Student Visit

Prospective students will spend some time visiting in their appropriate grade level. Heathwood teachers observe each candidate’s cognitive, physical and social/emotional development while the prospective student has the opportunity to experience “a day in the life” of a Heathwood student. Visiting times vary by grade level as follows:
• Rising Early Childhood 2 (EC2) No visit required.
• Rising Early Childhood 3 (EC3) 8:30 – 9:00 am
• Rising Early Childhood 4 (EC4) 9:00 – 11:30 am

Records and Transcripts

The school may contact teachers of young children applying to early childhood classes to help further understand each child’s prior school experience and individual gifts. Occasionally, the Head of Early Childhood may also observe an applicant in his/her current preschool in order to gain additional insight.

Admission Decision

An admission committee, including the Director of the Early Childhood Learning Center and early childhood teachers, reviews information gathered from a young candidate’s visit along with any additional information provided by parents and previous teachers. Decisions are communicated to each candidate’s family, with enrollment forms and information mailed or emailed to those candidates who are invited to enroll.

All students have the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded and made available to students at the school. Rising K through 4th grade

The following steps must be completed prior to an invitation to enroll. The Admission team will work closely with each prospective family to ensure a smooth process.

Records and Teacher Recommendations

Applicants in rising 2nd – 4th grade must submit school records and two teacher recommendations from his/her current school. Once you submit an application you will receive an email from the Admission office with these request forms attached. Applicants’ parents are responsible for requesting this information and ensuring its delivery to Heathwood. Please note that information provided on the teacher recommendations will be used as part of the admission decision; however, in order to honor the integrity of the admission process, we are unable to share specific details of the information given.

Student Visit

All prospective students will spend some time visiting in their appropriate grade level. Heathwood teachers observe each candidate’s cognitive, physical and social/emotional development and assess literacy and math skills. The visit also provides the prospective student the opportunity to experience “a day in the life” of a Heathwood student.

Visiting times vary by grade level as follows:

  • Rising Kindergarten 9:00 – 11:30 am
  • Rising 1st grade: 8:30 – 1:00 in a Kindergarten class room
  • Rising 2nd - 4th grade: 8:30 – 3:05 in their current grade level

Middle & Upper School Admission Process

Rising 5th through 12th grades

The following steps must be completed prior to an invitation to enroll. The Admission team will work closely with each prospective family to ensure a smooth process.

Records, Teacher Recommendations, and Supplements

Each applicant must submit school records and two teacher recommendations from his/her current school. Once you submit an application you will receive an email from the Admission office with these request forms attached. Applicants’ parents are responsible for requesting this information and ensuring its delivery to Heathwood. Please note that information provided on the teacher recommendations will be used as part of the admission decision; however, in order to honor the integrity of the admission process, we are unable to share specific details of the information given. Rising 5th through 8th grade applicants, upon request, will be asked to complete a writing sample. All rising 9th through 12th grade applicants are required to submit a writing sample (completed during their current school year) and supplemental questionnaire in support of their application.

Student Visit

All prospective students will spend an entire school day shadowing a current student in the appropriate grade level. This step is as important for the applicant as it is for our admission committee. Heathwood teachers observe each candidate’s cognitive, physical and social development while the prospective student has the opportunity to experience “a day in the life” of a Heathwood student. Please note that out of town and summer applicants will be handled on an individual basis.

Standardized Testing

Standardized testing is required for all applicants and helps our admission committee determine levels of academic ability and achievement. Testing may also be administered on campus if standardized testing is not available or does not provide sufficient information as part of the applicant’s current record.
