Heathwood Repeats as State Chess Champions

Chess ChampsFor the second year in a row, Heathwood's Upper School Chess Team has captured the SCISA State Championship. Senior Andrew Kriter earned the individual Upper School Championship, Pete Peterson was Upper School Individual Runner-up, and 5th grader Duncan Hicklin won the individual title in the Elementary Division. And the 6th-7th grade team finished in 4th place out of 16 teams.

Coached by Upper School Math Teacher Rip Blackstone, the Upper School Chess Team includes 9th graders Alex Lamey and Cal Peterson,11th graders Will Koon, Alex Myrick, and Ethan Smith, and 12th graders Andrew Kriter, William Morris, Pete Peterson, Jimmy Ruskell, Ryan Shelley, Daniel Sobel, and Lane Stanley.

The Middle School team, coached by senior Pete Peterson and 7th Grade Math Teacher Matthew Sanders, includes 5th graders Becket Ames, Jace Concepcion, and Duncan Hicklin, 6th grader Connor Melling, and 7th graders Hampton DuBose, Philip Ervin, Rebecca Firetag, Deuce Ivery, Ian McMahon, Allen Shea, Robert Thorne, and Jack Willcox.
